OUGD404 - Design Principles - Readability & Legibility Task + Hand Drawing Type

Studio Task: We put up all of our pre – prepared “who are you” A4 sheets on the wall.

Conclusions we made from observation:

- Distance affects both readability & legibility

- All on one line would make it more readable

- Script fonts are less readable when enlarged.

- The line length impacts on the readability of a font

- Whenever we print something out it is better to look at them from a distance before judging readability and legibility.

- Roman fonts are designed for body copy

- Block fonts work better larger scale, and mainly for headers and sub headers.

Second class task:

We used some of our printed letterforms to form variations. Fred instructed us to change the thickness of stem & counter size. We were also asked to draw our letters in light, regular and bold.

Unfortunately, due to a memory card crash, I have lost the photos of my letter forms. Here is an example of someone elses in the class, in order to show the process:

What I learnt from the process:

Drawing out type by hand is a difficult and complicated process, especially when dealing with curves. It is vital to have the correct materials with you in order to aid this, such as sharp fine liners at a variety of sizes, a compass, a ruler, pencils and a french curve.
