OUGD503 Responsive: Summative & Module Evaluation

Summative Evaluation

This module has been hugely beneficial to my practice. For the first time on my degree, I felt actual physical responsibilities for the work I was producing, and in many cases had to consider far more constrictions than with any other modules. One example of this was when working with Louise Leadbeater, who needed business stationary made. She obviously wanted printing costs as low as possible, and it was great to find out places to print at mass but still at a good price.

I really liked interacting with clients, and trying to convince them of my ideas. It was satisfying to take them through initial ideas, and see their happiness (most of the time). Unfortunately there were times I despised some of my clients. One of my clients was a good friend (who I shall not ever work with ever again), who doesn't plan on paying me until October, the fee only being £50. Another client, I had been working with for quite some time, with plenty of interactions. Half way through the project, he decided he did 'need' the branding, and therefore did not want to pay me. After making a mistake with one of my friends, this client signed a contract, to ensure I get paid no matter what. Sure enough, this second client has now been forced to pay me. This reinforces the importance of using contracts, and I also intend on asking for a 50% deposit up front, to scare away the people who don't take my practice seriously.

Working on two fashion branding briefs (one live, one competition) has made me consider the type of work I want to do in the future. It was great to work on both of these, and made me want to work on fashion branding much more in the future.

I have much more confidence in myself as a designer. When starting this module, I was scared to work with clients, and scared that my work would not be liked. After working with initial clients, I realised that I shouldn't be scared, as clients will see the doubt in your work. If you're confident in your own abilities, then clients are much more likely to trust you.

One thing I need to change is the way in which my business is shown to the public. I think due to the fact that I only have Behance as an only presence, clients have taken my work as seriously. I intend on designing my own website, with a custom URL and email address. This will be a much better way of contacting clients.

OUGD505: Studio Brief 2 - Crit Feedback

Below you can see the feedback from my crit. Unfortunately, due to other modules, this brief hash;t had much work on it. The feedback relates to things I COULD include with the branding.

1. What colour schemes would be suitable for an exhibition or Japanese product design?

- You could use the colours of the flag - including black for text - could give an aesthetic minimal approach.

- I think that the more minimal and clean you can get, the better! Some of the images on pinterest are quite traditional and old - Japanese product design is very futuristic so I think an aesthetic to mirror this is best.

- I agree, the colours of the Japanese flag would work really nicely.

- Japanese flag colours or a flag scheme derived from a famous Japanese artist's work. Maybe Hokusai?

- Japanese flag or similar schemes to Hirokazi Matsada work for Asahi KAsei homes in your publication.

2. Should I include lots of Japanese typography?

- Yes that would be really interesting (x3)
- Japanese typography would be a great way to incorporate the traditional Japanese style.
- Including Japanese typography would be a great way to convey a strong and honest sense of Japan.
- Yes - Make sure to look at how Japanese typography encompasses layout and composition (in line with Graham's sessions)
- Yes but don't go overboard. Remember a lot of the audience won't be able to read it.

3. Any specific images / aspects on Pinterest that would be suitable? (I had a tab open for a Pinterest board, for people to look at)

- Imagery that shows their culture could be interesting, as this is so strong and defines Japan, but definitely use Japanese type as well.

4. Sans serif or serif to work next to Japanese type?

- I think along with Japanese type you would want to use a sans serif otherwise it would just be too much and you want the Japanese typography to stand out.

- I would use sans serif.

- Sans serif just because Japanese character are quite simple and don't have any tapers to cut offs.

- I would say sans serif or a very minimal serifed typeface (maybe small slab serif)

OUGD505: Studio Brief 3 - Designing The Poster

Concept
After watching the film, there were two main things I wanted to include:

- The control Nurse Ratched has over the patients. Many of the patients in the hospital were volunteers, yet were scared to leave because of the nurse. She was also entirely to blame when Billy (who was only suffering from a stutter) killed himself. She was also the cause of his stutter.

From watching the film, I felt a huge amount of hatred towards her. The actress who played Nurse Ratched won multiple awards for her role, yet Jack Nicholson is featured on almost every poster I had found to do with the film. I feel that Louise Fletched deserves much more recognition, which is why I aim to put her on my poster.

- The Chief, who is supposed to be deaf and dumb, can actually speak and hear. He chooses to lie so he doesn't have to be involved with many things in the hospital. One of the only times he speaks, he says that whenever there is a staff meeting, a green mist appears from under the door. This mist represents the spread of negativity the staff bring to the hospital. I aim to include this through the use of green spray paint.

I aim to use red as my main colour. This can represent love, hate, anger, etc. Essentially these extreme emotions are those felt by the hospital inmates constantly.

I began experimenting with a monotone image of Nurse Ratched, which I added a half tone effect to. I aim to design the entire poster in red, with my second colour being green spray paint.

I then experimented with the use of a Wacom tablet and a variety of dry brushes, to make the type more psychologically disturbing.

Variations

Below are the variations I came up with, with my final design being last.

Final Design

Below are some mockups of the poster, with and without the spray paint. Obviously the physical poster will look different, but I wanted to illustrate how it could look.

OUGD505: Studio Brief 3 - Film Screenshots

Whilst watching the film for a second time, I decided to take some screenshots of facial expressions. I feel this could be something to work with to express the in depth thoughts and emotions of each main character. The emphasis of this film is on the characters, so I wanted to communicate this.

Focussing on Nurse Ratched

I wanted to focus on Nurse Ratched more, so I went back and took screenshots specifically of her.
